Lions' Montgomery and Gibbs Tie NFL Record with 14 Touchdowns Each
Detroit Lions' running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have tied an NFL record, joining an elite group of teammates who have each scored touchdowns in the same game 14 times. The duo follows in the footsteps of legendary Dallas Cowboys duo Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston, who set the record over 20 years ago.
Montgomery and Gibbs achieved the feat in the third quarter against the Bengals, with Gibbs scoring on a 20-yard reception from Jared Goff, and Montgomery following up with an eight-yard run. This remarkable performance ties them with Smith and Johnston, who also accomplished this feat while playing together for the Cowboys.
Smith and Johnston's partnership was instrumental in the Cowboys' success, with Smith winning four rushing titles and becoming the first rushing champion to win the Super Bowl. Johnston, too, was a valuable runner and receiver, scoring eight touchdowns on the ground and 14 receiving touchdowns in his career. They held the record for over 20 years and were part of the Cowboys' three Super Bowl wins in four years.
Montgomery and Gibbs, now sharing the record with Smith and Johnston, aim to emulate their predecessors' success. The Lions, with this dynamic duo, are targeting the Super Bowl title in 2025, looking to continue their impressive form and potentially create their own NFL legacy.
