Detroit Lions Regret Missing Out on Puka Nacua

Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes has expressed regret over a significant miss in the team's draft evaluations, citing Puka Nacua as a prime example. Nacua, a wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, has quickly emerged as one of the NFL's most productive young receivers.

In the 2023 NFL Draft, instead of pursuing Nacua, the Lions used a seventh-round pick to draft Antoine Green. At the time, the Detroit Lions had a need for additional depth at wide receiver. However, Nacua was selected by the Rams with the 177th overall pick in the fifth round.

Holmes has discussed this miss with his personnel staff, using it as a learning opportunity. Nacua's success—amassing 2,476 receiving yards and nine touchdowns over his first two seasons—highlighted what the Lions missed out on, especially considering Detroit's need for wide receiver depth in that draft.

Holmes emphasized the importance of honest self-assessment to promote growth and improvement. Recognizing such missed opportunities is essential for humility, he stated, and without it, the team cannot improve its personnel decisions.

Despite the regret about missing Nacua, Holmes and the Lions have focused on prospect development through other picks like Isaac TeSlaa and Dominic Lovett, who are showing promising contributions in the 2025 preseason.

Meanwhile, the Lions are continuing their preseason schedule, hosting the Miami Dolphins this weekend at Ford Field. Unfortunately, the team has suffered a setback, with safety Morice Noris sustaining a head injury during the preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Noris is currently in concussion protocol and is expected to be reassessed in 10 to 14 days. At the time of the injury, Detroit led 17-10 against the Falcons.

The game will air on the Lions TV Network at 1 p.m. ET.
