Lionel Richie's triumphant journey out of a critical personal predicament

Hailing from the States, Lionel Richie is a legendary pop music titan, selling over 100 million albums and earning four Grammys, an Oscar, and the admiration of countless fans worldwide. But what you might not know is that the prince of pop almost opted for a different path.

In his youth, Richie harbored dreams of the priesthood. As he confessed to "Die Zeit" magazine, he found inspiration in certain religious figures. "I figured, alright, maybe I'll become a priest. I was already an altar boy, and I thought that was the path to take," he shared. However, destiny had other plans, as Richie co-founded R&B band, The Commodores, and the allure of the spotlight captivated him. "I was performing on stage, and for the first time, girls were screaming at the sight of me. And if you knew me back then, you'd realize that no girl had ever screamed at the sight of me," Richie quipped.

Fast forward to the 1990s, and Richie found himself facing a formidable challenge: vocal cord problems that left him on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Coping with his father's passing, this medical predicament, and the pain of a divorce, Richie was at a crossroads. Facing these life-altering events, he turned to his music for solace. Strangely enough, the songs he'd penned for others now provided a comforting echo of his own struggles. "I listened to my songs and cried at my words, as I hadn't written them for myself. I'd written them for others who'd gone through similar trials, and now I was hearing my own words for the first time, thinking, 'Oh my God,' and just listened to myself," he revealed.

Despite these hardships, Richie pressed on, creating timeless classics like "Hello", "All Night Long", and "Say You, Say Me". In 2025, Lionel embarked on his "Say Hello To The Hits" tour, playing 27 shows across 16 countries, including five shows in Germany: Cologne on June 22, Oberhausen on June 24, Hamburg on June 29, Berlin on July 3, and Munich on July 9.

Suffering a divorce during his challenging period, Richie wed Diane Alexander in 1996. While specific details on how he tackled personal challenges in the 1990s are scarce, it's generally understood that artists turn to their music for a means of expression. By sharing their stories through song, artists can channel their emotions and find a sense of healing during tumultuous times.
