Lionel Messi's Future with Argentina National Team Remains Uncertain

Speculation is mounting over Lionel Messi's potential participation in the 2026 World Cup, as reports suggest that his chances of returning to Buenos Aires as part of the squad are bleak. However, neither Messi nor the Argentine Football Association (AFA) have confirmed his retirement following his expected final official match for the Argentine national team on September 5, 2025.

The match, which will take place at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires during the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, is reported to be Messi's last official match in Buenos Aires with the national team. Yet, the future of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner remains uncertain, with discussions about retirement remaining speculative.

Messi is expected to appear in the remaining fixtures of the World Cup Qualifiers, but a final decision on his retirement has not been made. The AFA and Messi have not yet confirmed these reports, leaving fans in a state of anticipation.

In a more positive note, Messi is set to visit India from December 12 to 15, 2025, for his first visit since 2011. Dubbed as the "GOAT Tour of India 2025", the tour will include four cities: Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. During his visit to Kolkata, Messi will unveil a 25-foot mural of himself.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11, 2026, to June 19, 2026, will be a historic event as it will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with 48 teams participating. Messi, who won the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, has not publicly committed to retiring or withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup.

Messi made his debut for the Argentine national team in 2005 against Hungary and has since gone on to win two Copa America trophies (2021, 2024) and the 2022 World Cup with the Argentine national team. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, one thing is clear: Messi's impact on the world of football is undeniable.
