In the early hours of July 6, 2025, a dramatic event unfolded near the Turkish resort of Antalya. A lion named Zeus, from the Land of Lions animal theme park in Manavgat, managed to escape his enclosure and attacked a sleeping farmer named Suleyman Kir in a nearby pistachio field.

According to reports by the BirGun newspaper, Kir sustained injuries to his head, shoulder, and legs. However, he bravely managed to struggle with the lion, grabbing it around the neck and squeezing until it ran off. Kir was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and his injuries were not reported as life-threatening.

Following the attack, authorities launched a search operation for Zeus, assisted by drones. The lion was eventually found in a nearby wooded area and was shot dead due to the danger it posed to people and the environment. The governor confirmed that Zeus could not be captured alive due to safety concerns.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and containment measures at the Land of Lions theme park, which houses around 30 big cats and claims to have the world's largest lion family. An investigation into the incident has been initiated, and no further information about potential consequences for the park has been provided.

In a video posted online, Suleyman Kir described his harrowing experience wrestling with the lion. He emphasised that if he had not been strong, he might not have survived the attack. The exact reason for Zeus's escape remains unclear.

This series of events highlights the urgent need for improved safety and containment measures at the Land of Lions theme park, ensuring the safety of both animals and visitors. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further updates are expected in due course.

The incident sparked a flurry of news headlines and lifestyle articles about the safety concerns at the Land of Lions theme park. Travel advisories were issued, cautioning visitors about the potential risks associated with the park. Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts debated whether zoos and wildlife parks should be Phased out from tourism or if improved safety measures could prevent such incidents in the future.
