Lightning bolster defense by acquiring Ian Mitchell from Red Wings

The Tampa Bay Lightning have added depth to their defence by acquiring Ian Mitchell from the Detroit Red Wings. The 27-year-old, drafted 57th overall by Chicago in 2017, now joins the organisation after a season split between the NHL and AHL. He will report to the Syracuse Crunch, Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate, for the remainder of the campaign.

Mitchell's professional journey began after a strong college career at the University of Denver. From 2017 to 2020, he recorded 89 points in 116 games before turning pro with the Chicago Blackhawks' AHL team, the Rockford IceHogs. His NHL debut came soon after, and over six seasons, he played 110 games with Chicago and the Boston Bruins, contributing 19 points while averaging 15:10 of ice time per game.

In the AHL, Mitchell has been a consistent performer. Across 201 games with Rockford, Providence, and Grand Rapids, he tallied 113 points and maintained a +51 rating. This season alone, he suited up for 45 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, posting 20 points and a +27 rating. His experience includes 10 career game-winning goals in the minors. Originally signed by Detroit as a free agent in July 2025, Mitchell spent the 2025-26 season with the Griffins. The trade to Tampa Bay marks his third NHL organisation, with his immediate assignment to Syracuse reinforcing the Crunch's defensive lineup.

Mitchell brings a mix of NHL experience and AHL reliability to the Lightning's system. His track record in both leagues suggests he can contribute at multiple levels. The move also provides Tampa Bay with additional defensive options as the season progresses.
