Lidl poised to secure significant ownership in Lidl-Trek professional cycling team in WorldTour

In the world of international road cycling, advanced discussions are underway that could significantly reshape the landscape. Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is in talks to acquire a majority stake in the Lidl-Trek WorldTour cycling team, with Trek retaining a significant ownership stake as co-owner and technical partner [1][2][3][4].

The partnership marks a deepening of Lidl's commitment to the sport, having been involved since mid-2023. The deal, expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, subject to approval from all relevant authorities, aims to elevate Lidl-Trek to one of the best teams in the sport [1][2][3][4].

Trek, the original founder of the team in 2014, will continue to play a crucial role, maintaining a significant minority stake and acting as a technical partner. This collaboration is designed to enhance the team's performance, attract top talent, and improve infrastructure [1][2][3][4].

A key aspect of the partnership is the planned investment in a state-of-the-art Performance Center. This facility will focus on athlete health, recovery, and performance analysis, benefiting both the men's and women's teams [1][2][3][4].

The women's squad, already a top contender, is set to receive particular emphasis. Notable new signings include Niamh Fisher-Black, Riejanne Markus, and Emma Norsgaard, who joined the team due to increased funding [1][2][3][4].

On the men's side, Tao Geoghegan Hart joined as a key new signing, also thanks to increased funding, and Jonathan Milan's impressive performance in the ongoing Tour de France has put him on track to win the points classification, scheduled for Paris on Sunday [1][2][3][4].

However, the potential merger could lead to changes for some riders. Biniam Girmay, currently contracted to Intermarché-Wanty, may opt not to remain with the new Lotto-Intermarché project if it happens [1][2][3][4].

Lidl-Trek's General Manager, Luca Guercilena, expressed optimism about the future, stating that the partnership between Lidl and Trek looks bright [1][2][3][4]. The official announcement was made during the 2025 Tour de France period, with the ownership restructuring progressing constructively, pending full regulatory approvals [1][2][3][4].
