Berlin's Central Library Seeks New Home with Ample Public Space

The Central and Regional Library Berlin (ZLB), the city's most visited cultural institution, is in need of a new location due to the necessity for renovation. The ZLB, which currently houses up to 5,000 visitors a day, has far too little public space, according to its director, Jonas Fansa.

Fansa has been urging politics to speed up the process of finding a new location. In an interview with "Tagesspiegel Checkpoint", he emphasized the importance of the new location offering enough space to serve as a living and working room for the city society.

The current discussion involves the possibility of the ZLB moving to Alexanderplatz and sharing a building with Galeria Kaufhof. However, the search results do not provide information about the person currently involved in the legal proceedings concerning the relocation.

The need for a new ZLB with ample public space is highlighted by the high number of daily visits to the current ZLB. Fansa believes that Berlin deserves a central public library with a large digital and physical collection and offerings for the entire city, without the need for constant travel.

Previously, a proposal to move the ZLB into the former Lafayette building on Friedrichstraße was made by former culture senator Joe Chialo (CDU). However, cost issues led to the failure of this proposal, and it is possible that the need for adequate public space was a contributing factor.

The ZLB has been housed at two locations: Blücherplatz and Breitscheidstraße, but the current situation requires constant travel back and forth between east and west for the ZLB's offerings. Fansa stated that the location question must be resolved urgently to prevent cultural assets from being at risk of flooding.

The new ZLB, as envisioned by Fansa, should provide ample public space to accommodate the large number of daily visitors. It should also offer a central public library for the whole city without the need for constant travel. Fansa emphasized that the new location should not necessitate such travel.

The search for a new location for the ZLB has been ongoing for some time, and the stakes are high. With the right location and sufficient public space, the ZLB can continue to serve as a vital cultural institution for the city of Berlin.
