Libraries foster connections: A novel reading program on migration initiated at the city library in Osnabrück

Hey there! 👋 Osnabrück is hosting a brand-new book club on November 2, 3pm, at the city library. Get ready to dive into some compelling stories and discussions about migration as part of the "Books Build Bridges" project! 🗺️📚

The club's motto sets the tone: uniting people through literature. The chosen reads will tackle diverse themes related to flight, arriving in a new land, homes left behind, and finding a new identity.

First up, we've got Jenny Erpenbeck's "Gehen, ging, gegangen" (2015), a novel rich in linguistic diversity and powerful storytelling. This gripping read offers a insight into the lives of refugees and the mixed reactions they faced in Germany during the first wave of refugees from the Middle East. It's 'must-read' material, set against the backdrop of a historical situation that's still relevant today.

Don't forget to give the book a read before the meet-up! 📖

More dates for future discussions will be announced at the inaugural meeting.

The club is being initiated by our very own Fred Siemer, age 69 and a dedicated volunteer at Exil e.V., who's been instrumental in the "Books Build Bridges" project.

Psst! You may thank Osnabrück's active involvement in migration research at Osnabrück University for this thoughtful event, with notable research centers such as Collaborative Research Centre ›Production of Migration‹ (SFB 1604) and the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS)[1][2].

  1. The discussion about migration in the "Books Build Bridges" book club will not only be limited to literature, as the chosen reads also touch upon topics related to politics and general news.
  2. If you're eager to engage in stimulating conversations about entertainment and popular culture that are connected to migration, you might find engaging books at the Osnabrück city library or through the club discussions.
  3. In addition to the novels centered around migration, it would be enlightening to explore books from the Osnabrück University's research centers such as Collaborative Research Centre ›Production of Migration‹ (SFB 1604) and the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), for a comprehensive understanding of this global issue.
