Liberal Party Secures Victory in Election Amid Trump's Trade War; Carney Set to Establish New Government, Predictions Suggest

Cranky, Unfiltered Take:

Canada's Liberal Party snatched victory in national elections, fueled by Trump's trade brawls and territorial naughtiness that made the Canadian prime minister's balls grow bigger than Mount Rushmore.

Mark Carney, a 60-year-old economist turned leader, kept his top spot after the numbers pointed to his Liberals ruling over the most seats in the House of Commons, according to CBC and CTV News. It wasn't clear if Carney could form a full-blown government or if he'd need a party hose to clean up some smaller messes.

The Liberals, who've been in power for four straight terms, last enjoyed a parliamentary monopoly back in 2015. In previous years, they've leaned on the New Democratic Party, a left-wing bunch, to push their bills through when they waddled into parliament with only 160 seats in their pockets. As votes were still being tallied late on Monday, the Liberals seemed ready to win at least 160 seats, while the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, looked poised to land at least 151.

Poilievre aimed to profit from the disdain for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but Trump's comeback to the White House stirred up a tidal wave of patriotic sentiment in Canada, and voters rallied behind ol' Carney. After commanding the lead for over two years, the Conservatives lost their edge after Carney took charge when Trudeau bit the dust and tensions flared between Ottawa and Washington.

In the final stretch before Election Day, the Liberals surged ahead as the clear favorites. When Carney campaigned, he boasted about his financial expertise and stood up to Trump like a boss, calling out his trade blows and ridiculous annexation threats.

"It's bye-bye to our old bromance with the United States!" Carney declared to voters on Sunday, adding, "America's economic supremacy? Over it. And Canada's got to adapt." Carney promised to defend Canada against Trump's tariffs and counter with their own, focusing the hit where it would sting the most in the United States while having minimal impact north of the border.

Meanwhile, Trump hopped on his social media platform, Truth Social, to encourage Canadians before they headed to the polls: "Good luck to the Canadians! Elect the man who can cut your taxes in half, beef up your military, and quadruple your economy, all while slashin' tariffs and taxes! If you become our 51st state, it's kaboom, baby! Bigger and better!"

As Canadians cast their ballots, nearly 29 million were eligible to vote. A record-breaking 7.3 million voted in advance of the election.
