Liberal friends express feelings of relief following the death of Charlie Kirk
In the aftermath of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, a prominent figure in American politics was gunned down on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah on September 10, 2025. The weapon recovered at the scene was a bolt-action rifle, a firearm valued for its reliability but limited to a single shot before reloading.
During a recent episode of 'Soul Boom', a podcast hosted by Rainn Wilson, Mark Ruffalo expressed his concerns about the deepening political divide within the country. Ruffalo, also a participant in the podcast, shifted the conversation to gun control, voicing his concern about people walking around with 'weapons of war'.
Ruffalo, who lost his brother to gun violence, spoke about the simple, yet durable design of bolt-action rifles. Unlike semiautomatic firearms, the shooter must manually operate the bolt handle to chamber a new round, lift and pull the bolt handle to remove the spent cartridge, and lower the bolt to lock the round and seal the chamber, making it ready to fire again.
Rainn Wilson recounted some of his liberal friends having a 'kind of a good riddance' reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. However, Ruffalo expressed sympathy for Kirk, despite their political differences, and stated that cheering on opponents being hurt or harmed does not lead to societal victory.
