Liana's final resting place has been located.

In the tranquil surroundings of Heiligenstadt's main cemetery, a mourning hall has been set up for 16-year-old Liana K., a vibrant Ukrainian girl whose life was tragically cut short. The chapel of rest, adorned with white and pale pink roses fashioned into a heart, cradles a black urn, a poignant symbol of the loss felt by her family and community. At Liana's feet, daisies, sunflowers, and baby's breath lay, a testament to the life she lived.

The public prosecutor's office in Göttingen is currently investigating the case, with charges of intentional manslaughter levelled against a 31-year-old Iraqi man. The suspect, who is not in custody but resides in a psychiatric facility, is alleged to have pushed Liana onto a passing freight train at Friedland station on August 11, 2025.

Four hundred mourners, including community members, schoolmates, and neighbours, attended Liana's funeral, held in Ukrainian Orthodox style. The service was a poignant reminder of the life lost, and the community's collective grief.

The suspected perpetrator's case is being handled by the Göttingen public prosecutor's office. It has come to light that the suspect was an asylum seeker whose application was rejected, and an expulsion order to Lithuania had been in place since March. In July, a court rejected an application for detention pending deportation.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage nationwide, with many questioning whether granting detention pending deportation could have saved Liana's life. The mourners at her funeral discussed this point, their voices echoing the nation's collective sorrow and disbelief.

Notable figures such as Markus Janitzki, the mayor of Geisleden, and Björn Höcke, the AfD leader in Thuringia, were among the attendees, offering their condolences and support to Liana's family. However, Dr. Marion Frant (CDU) and Thomas Spielmann (BI) did not attend the funeral.

Liana's family found their first home in Geisleden after fleeing Mariupol. The ambitious teenager, who dreamt of a bright future, had sought support from Björn Höcke's citizen's office after her death.

As the investigation continues, the community remains united in their grief, a testament to the life of a girl whose spirit continues to touch the hearts of many.
