Liam Neeson, one of Britain's most iconic pop culture figures, has had an illustrious career spanning over three decades. Known for his roles in various franchises and films, he has left an indelible mark in the world of cinema. However, there are some roles that he could have taken but chose to pass on, such as the iconic James Bond.

Following his Oscar-nominated success with Schindler's List, Neeson was contacted by James Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli in the 1990s. The prospect of portraying the suave secret agent was enticing, but it was not meant to be. Neeson expressed interest in the role, but his wife, Natasha Richardson, had other plans.

Richardson, who was a respected actress in her own right, reportedly objected to Neeson playing James Bond. She told him, “If you play James Bond, we’re not getting married.” Out of respect for her wishes, Neeson declined the role, despite producers seeing star potential in him and his own interest.

This decision marked a significant turning point in Neeson's life and career, as it resulted in a decade and a half of marriage. Pierce Brosnan ultimately played James Bond in 1995's GoldenEye, and Neeson did not get the role.

Neeson's reluctance towards long-term commitments may have also played a role in his decision to turn down the James Bond role. He preferred to take on varied roles rather than commit to the Bond franchise, which requires an actor to play the character for multiple films.

In addition to James Bond, Neeson turned down roles in other iconic franchises, such as Boromir in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and a potential Qui-Gon Jinn spin-off in Star Wars. Sean Bean, who played Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye, replaced Neeson as Boromir in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Neeson has appeared in franchise films, including Star Wars and the Naked Gun reboot. He portrayed Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace and reprised the role in a brief cameo in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite his brief stint in the Star Wars universe, Neeson has expressed reluctance towards a Qui-Gon Jinn spin-off show.

Currently, Neeson is the reigning king of the shoot 'em up revenge movie and the star of the Naked Gun reboot. His wife, Natasha Richardson, passed away in 2009, leaving a void in Neeson's life that he continues to grapple with.

Despite the roles that he could have taken, Neeson's career has been marked by a string of successful films and memorable performances. His ability to take on varied roles and his unique screen presence have made him a beloved figure in the world of cinema.
