Li Haotong Clinches Masters Berth and Probably PGA Tour Card Due to Impressive Performance at The Open Championship
Haotong Li ended the final round of the 2025 Open at 11-under-par, finishing in a tie for 4th place with Wyndham Clark and Matt Fitzpatrick. This impressive performance marks Li's third appearance at the Masters, the first in seven years.
The Chinese golfer started the final round trailing World No.1 Scottie Scheffler by four strokes. However, Li managed to make a new friend in Scheffler during the tournament, exchanging jokes during their final group play. Scottie Scheffler even agreed to practice with Li, but Li jokingly reminded him to reply to his texts.
Li's approach game was on point this week, gaining 6.66 strokes, which ranked him 3rd in the field. He showcased his skills with a clutch up-and-down for birdie from the greenside bunker on the 17th hole during the final round.
Li's journey to the top 4 was not an easy one. At the end of 2021, he was ranked 460th in the world and missed 18 cuts in 22 events. However, he turned his game around, ending last year ranked 308 and winning the Qatar Masters in February. His current world ranking stands at 111th, setting him up for a huge rise up the rankings.
For his efforts at the 2025 Open, Li earned around $700,000 from the Open prize money payout. Moreover, he expressed his happiness about securing a spot in the Masters again and stated that he was aware he needed a few more birdies during the final round to secure his PGA Tour card.
Li's performance at the 2025 Open was not his only achievement this year. He received an invitation to play on the PGA Tour from the organization PGA Tour, and he is expected to earn his PGA Tour card via the DP World Tour, as he has moved up to 3rd in the Race to Dubai rankings.
Li was delighted with his partnership with Scottie Scheffler and found him to be a lovely guy to play with. He ended the tournament with a birdie-par score, signing for a one-under-par 70 on Sunday at Portrush. As he looks forward to the Masters, Li will undoubtedly bring his improved form and positive attitude to the green.
