Leyens faces demands for resignation from Wagenknecht due to the customs agreement
In a dramatic turn of events, Sahra Wagenknecht, the leader of the German political party For Reason and Justice (BSW), has called for the resignation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This bold move comes in the wake of a controversial transatlantic trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the United States (USA) that Wagenknecht has strongly criticized.
The agreement, which has been met with widespread criticism due to potential burdens on the economy, includes a tariff rate of 15% on many goods imported from the EU into the USA. However, certain product categories, such as chemicals and aircraft, are exempt from these tariffs. The EU has pledged to invest 600 billion US dollars in the USA as part of the agreement, and the USA plans to purchase liquefied natural gas, oil, and other fuels worth 750 billion dollars from the EU.
However, experts have voiced concerns about the EU's plan to purchase such a large quantity of fuels from the USA, deeming it unrealistic. Additionally, the EU's planned investments and fuel purchases are a cause for concern for climate protection, according to experts.
Wagenknecht argues that the agreement disproportionately harms Germany’s industrial and export sectors. She further advocates for resuming energy imports from Russia, which were largely reduced due to the Ukraine war, as part of stabilizing Germany's economy despite EU efforts to diversify energy sources.
Wagenknecht's criticism primarily focuses on the perceived negative economic impact of the deal under President Donald Trump’s administration, with von der Leyen's role being central to this unfavourable outcome. She accuses von der Leyen of causing significant damage to Germany through this deal and demands that the German government and other EU countries push for von der Leyen's removal and the cancellation of the trade agreement.
