Leuna Bio-Refinery Starts Production of Wood-Based Chemicals - Leuna Bio-Refinery Starts Production of Wood-Based Chemicals

The world’s first commercial-scale biorefinery turning wood into bio-based chemicals has begun operations. Located in Leuna Chemical Park, the facility is now producing industrial sugar and other chemical feedstocks for use in packaging, textiles, and cosmetics.

UPM has officially launched production at its new biorefinery in Leuna. The company has invested nearly €1.2 billion in the project, marking a major step in sustainable chemical manufacturing.

BASF confirmed that the site has started commissioning wood-based chemicals. The facility will supply raw materials for PET packaging, fabrics, and beauty products. UPM plans to expand its product range further, with new commercial offerings expected in the first half of next year.

The Leuna biorefinery is now operational, producing industrial sugar and other bio-based chemicals. UPM’s investment signals a shift toward renewable feedstocks in industries like packaging and textiles. More products from the site will enter the market within months.
