Riding in Honor of Saint Leonhardi in Bavaria
Embracing tradition, people flocked to the streets in several towns across Bavaria on a recent Monday. Approximately 300 horses and 70 lavishly decorated floats, some even historical, joined the festivities, making this pilgrimage in Bad Tölz, a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage in Germany since 2017, a renowned event. Cardinal Reinhard Marx from Munich also joined in the celebration and conducted an open-air service at the Calvary.
Saint Leonhardi, the patron saint of farm animals, inspired this annual tradition in Bavaria and parts of Austria. Known as "Leonhardiritt" in German, these horseback rides or processions, mostly occur around Saint Leonhard's Day on November 6th, with many locales hosting festivities over the weekend preceding it. Rimsting (Rosenheim district) and Kreuth (Miesbach district), for instance, feature prominent, celebratory horse parades.
However, this year, Benediktbeuern was an exception. A devastating hailstorm in August severely damaged the monastery and other structures, resulting in the early cancellation of the annual pilgrimage by the local Leonhardi committee. Despite the hardships, the cherished horse procession persisted in other parts of Upper Bavaria, with Kreuth and Rimsting standing out for their grand Leonhard rides.
