Leo XIV Disseminated Controversial Commentaries on American Political Landscape

"Pope Leo X Got Real About US Politics"

The newly elected Pope Leo X, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, is stirring controversy with his critical stance on U.S. politics, recently taking potshots at Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump on an online platform.

Before ascending to the throne of St. Peter, Leo X shared articles criticizing Trump and Vance. In a post from February 3, Cardinal Prevost wrote on X, a popular social media platform: "JD Vance is off his rocker! Jesus doesn't demand that we prioritize our love for ourselves over others." The comment referenced an article in the "National Catholic Reporter."

Leo X's Vatican confirmation on Thursday acknowledged that the X account belongs to the Chicago-born ex-cardinal and new Pope. The article shared by Prevost on X called out Vance for justifying Washington's reduction in foreign aid using Catholic teachings. Vance, a Catholic convert, argued that Christians should prioritize their love for their families instead of the world at large, citing a quote from medieval theologian and philosopher Thomas Aquinas.

In another post before his coronation, Prevost shared an article criticizing Washington's erroneous deportation of a migrant to El Salvador.

"God Bless 'Im," Said Vance

Trump and Vance didn't comment on Prevost's posts during their congratulations. Vance, who had a meeting with the late Pope Francis only hours before his demise on Easter Sunday, published on X: "May God bless him!" He expressed optimism that "millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful leadership of the Church."

Trump described the election of the US cardinal as "a great honor" for the U.S., looking forward to meeting the new Pope. He wrote on his Truth Social platform: "That'll be a momentous occasion."

It's unknown whether the newly-minted Pope Leo X will continue his critical remarks on U.S. politics or alter his stance as he embarks on his papal journey.
