Leipzig's RB squad: Bold aspirations, momentous breakthroughs – momentous victories?
In the 2025/26 season, RB Leipzig welcomed a new coach, Ole Werner, as the team embarked on a mission to return to its much-touted DNA. Werner replaced Marco Rose, who was sacked after more than 900 days in charge and 124 games.
The departure of key players such as Benjamin Sesko (who joined Manchester United for the second most expensive sale in RB Leipzig's history), Yussuf Poulsen (moved to Hamburger SV), and Janis Blaswich (moved to Leverkusen) among others, has left gaps in the squad. Eljif Elmas, Timo Werner, Amadou Haidara, and Kevin Kampl are also potential departures.
However, Werner's arrival has brought a new approach to communication, fostering a positive team spirit. The offensive engine of the team is running smoothly, with many chances created in pre-season and the DFB-Pokals.
The central defence, however, remains a concern due to the limited number of specialists and the injury history of Willi Orban. A necessary addition to the squad is on the agenda.
Last season, RB Leipzig struggled with their finishing, which led to their historically poor Bundesliga finish in 7th place, their lowest position in nine years. The team showed weaknesses in their DFB-Pokal game against Sandhausen, particularly in the early stages.
The big question in squad planning is whether Dutch superstar Xavi Simons will leave Leipzig, with Premier League club FC Chelsea reportedly interested. Simons does not need to leave for financial reasons, according to the current manager, Marcel Schäfer.
The newly assembled and reshuffled team needs to gel together to reach their goal of Champions League qualification. There are still many issues to address, and the player pool is still crowded. Among the six newcomers, Ezechiel Banzuzi, Yan Diomande, Johan Bakayoko, Andrija Maksimovic, Romulo, and Max Finkgraefe have joined the team.
Werner's tenure has only just begun, and it remains to be seen how he will navigate these challenges and lead RB Leipzig back to the top. The team's performance in the upcoming Bundesliga season will be closely watched as they strive to overcome their recent setbacks and return to their former glory.
