Spanish handball coach Raúl Alonso has joined SC DHfK Leipzig on a two-year contract, effective until June 30, 2027. The 46-year-old will take over from Runar Sigtryggsson, who parted ways with the club following their weakest season in the German top flight.

Alonso's coaching career in Germany began in 2008 with Rhein-Main Bienen in the Frauen-Bundesliga, where he worked until 2009. He then served as assistant coach at THW Kiel from 2010 to 2015, working under head coach Alfred Gislason. This role at one of Germany's top clubs gave him significant experience in the Bundesliga environment.

After coaching stints in Austria and Belarus, Alonso returned to the German Bundesliga in 2021 with HC Erlangen. Initially, he took on the role of sports director and later became the head coach from January 2022 until June 2023. He ended his responsibilities as sports director in 2024.

Karsten Günther, the manager of SC DHfK Leipzig, expressed excitement about the quick appointment of Raúl Alonso, stating that he brings a wealth of experience to the club. Günther believes Alonso's extensive experience with top clubs will be vital in returning the team to success.
