Solar Thermal Power Plant to Go Online in Leipzig Next Year - Leipzig's Largest Solar Thermal Plant to Cut Fossil Fuel Reliance
Leipzig is set to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels for heating, with the construction of Germany's largest solar thermal power plant nearing completion. The €40 million project, led by Leipziger Stadtwerke, will generate clean energy to heat homes and businesses in the city. The plant, due to start operations in May 2026 following a trial run in early 2025, will cover 2% of Leipzig's annual district heating demand. It marks a significant step in decarbonizing the city's heat supply, which currently relies heavily on natural gas and some coal. Construction is entering its final phase. Soon, crews will begin laying pipes to connect the facility to Leipzig's district heating network, scheduled to start in November. While the specific companies involved in the project were not mentioned, Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH, a key player in local energy projects, is known to be collaborating with CAC and TotalEnergies on a waste heat utilization project in the city. The completion of this solar thermal power plant will bring Leipzig closer to its sustainability goals. It will not only reduce the city's carbon footprint but also contribute to energy security by diversifying Leipzig's heat supply.
