Leipzig secures new coaching appointment: Werner takes over the reins - Leipzig appoints Werner as their new coach

Catching a breather after a relentless chase and numerous would-be suitors turning their noses up at the offer, RB Leipzig has finally scored the gridiron general to revitalize their sports surge—none other than former Bremen coach, Ole Werner. With this new recruit, the Saxon powerhouse is poised to tear up the competition both nationally and internationally.

"I'm over the moon to be named the new top dog of RB Leipzig! The intensive discussions with the brass proved we've got our heads screwed on the same way where football and work ethic are concerned," Werner boasted to RB reps, his eyes sparkling with excitement. Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schafer, echoed the feeling, stating, "We're thrilled to onboard Werner. Together, we'll sweat it out to get RB Leipzig back in the limelight and back on the path to victory starting Day 1!"

A two-year pact, running through 2027, is the deal on the table, the ink on the contract drying just days after Schafer and Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's CEO, reached a breakthrough in the enduring negotiations.

Once upon a time, Werner had made it clear that he didn't fancy extending his contract beyond the conclusion of the previous season. But with the ink still wet on his no-longer-valid agreement, Werder couldn't help but release the fired-up football mastermind.

In Leipzig, Werner confronts a daunting challenge. Finding themselves without Marco Rose following a parting of the ways in March, Zsolt Löw temporarily filled the void as interim coach. Löw, though, is slated to reprise his role as Chief Strategist under Red Bull's global football godfather, Jürgen Klopp, once his temp gig is up.

Klopp had his work cut out for him during his first half-year "up in the big house." However, convincing Werner appeared to consume less effort than one might think. Still, other names circulated the whispers:

  • Cesc Fabregas (Como): Daydreaming about a return to the pitch after a truncated stint as a pundit, Fabregas was briefly considered.
  • Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace): A much-sought-after talent in the football world, Glasner was tempted but ultimately opted to remain with Palace.
  • Roger Schmidt (Benfica Lisbon): Known for his unconventional yet successful strategies, Schmidt brought home the gold in Portugal but apparently felt his work there was far from done.
  • Sandro Wagner (FC Augsburg): The son of a legend lured some attention from Leipzig, but Wagner had his own goals in mind.
  • Davide Ancelotti (Now with Brazil's National Team): The hotshot protege of the renowned Carlo Ancelotti—Brazil's new head coach—was also under consideration, but ultimately rejected Leipzig's advances.

One contender who came close to securing the position was Jacob Neestrup of FC Copenhagen. But Neestrup's club scuttled the deal when they refused to authorize early contract termination.

Schafer was resolute, announcing immediately after the season's end that the team was in dire need of a fresh start and a full-scale overhaul. Seventh place in the Bundesliga won't cut it for Leipzig, and the club's signature RB philosophy has started to fade.

As for the players, there are a few veterans on the roster who've come up through the ranks at RB. How they—and the rest of the squad—will adapt to Werner's unique style is a puzzle yet to be solved as the season approaches.
