Leipzig 11-minute experiment went down the drain

Leipzig's unexpected 11-minute experiment in the quarterfinals ended up falling flat on its face. Initially, the team fielded seven outfield players in attack, with backcourt players Simon Ernst and Marko Mamic strutting their stuff in the circle. This innovative strategy, however, failed to pan out. Leipzig's goalie, Nebojsa Simic, even saw the opportunity to score an empty netter, pushing the score to 2:5 (8'). Coach Runar Sigtryggsson quickly called a timeout to put a halt to this quirky experiment.

Macej Gebala, who had earlier gotten his mane tamed by the physiotherapists, returned to his usual spot in the circle. But things didn't get any better for Leipzig. They continued to struggle, and a botched throw-in led to a swift counter-attack and a crucial lead for the favorites through Tim Kastening at 7:12/21.

Leipzig's 11-minute experiment went wrong

It was characteristic of Leipzig to bounce back, though. Viggo Kristjansson scored a seven-meter penalty to tie the score at 12-13 (29'). Leipzig, however, only managed to find the back of the net once more during the first twelve minutes of the second half, allowing Melsungen to regain a five-goal lead. The gap was extended to seven before Andri Runarsson, the regular playmaker, twisted his ankle and was forced to exit the game.

Leipzig wasn't even close to making it to the Final Four for a second time since 2017.
