Leinster's Disappointing Journey in the URC Semi-Finals
Winning the Pro14 four times in a row, Leinster seemed unstoppable. Yet, their journey in the URC has been anything but a cakewalk. Despite leading the table in three of the last four seasons, they've struggled to conquer the URC, with three consecutive semi-final defeats causing plenty of heartache.
In 2022, a promising URC campaign came to an end at the hands of the rampaging Bulls. Leinster, sitting on top of the URC table, had dominated the Bulls 31-3 earlier in the season. However, in their semi-final at the RDS, a talented Bulls side turned the tables to claim a memorable victory.
The first half saw the Bulls taking a lead, with tries from Johan Grobbelaar and Marcell Coetzee. Leinster managed to claw their way back with a score from Robbie Henshaw, but trailing 24-14 on 53 minutes, things looked grim. A late try from Jordan Larmour narrowed the gap, but it wasn't enough to secure a comeback. The Bulls held on to clinch a surprising win.
Another heartbreaking defeat came the following season when Munster stunned Leinster in the URC semi-final. Despite Leinster's impressive 16-18 record, Munster, who had been on a late-season run, held their own throughout the match. With four minutes remaining, Jack Crowley's dropgoal secured a historic win for Munster.
In 2023, the Bulls dealt Leinster another loud blow, ending their season with a semi-final win. After a closely contested first half, the Bulls managed to pull ahead, eventually securing yet another victory over Leinster.
With three URC semi-final defeats in a row under their belt, Leinster heads into the 2023/24 season with a renewed determination to reclaim the title they've lost grip of.
