Legislative Body of the European Union

The European Parliament (EP), acting as an equal co-legislator with the Council of the European Union in most policy areas, has convened for its tenth legislative term following the June 2024 European elections. This assembly, which is the directly elected representative body of the citizens of the European Union, has multiple working locations, with Strasbourg serving as its official seat. However, the parliament also works in Brussels and Luxembourg. The European Parliament Liaison Office is located in Germany.

The EP was established in 1952 as the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community and has been composed through general, direct, free, and secret elections, held every five years.

The current legislative term sees the EP comprising 720 members, most of whom belong to one of the eight political groups. These include the European People's Party (EPP), Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), Patriots for Europe (PfE), European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Renew Europe (RE), Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA), European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL), and Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF).

In Germany, the largest delegation in the EP consists of 96 members. The German MEPs are distributed across 15 political parties, with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), holding the largest number of seats (23 and 6 respectively). Other significant parties represented in the German delegation include the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Alliance 90/The Greens, and Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The main tasks of the EP include legislation, democratic control over the other EU institutions, adoption of the EU budget, and election of the President of the European Commission. Among its current members, Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola serves as the President of the European Parliament (EPP).

In preparation for plenary sessions, MEPs work in a total of 24 committees. Seven German MEPs were elected as committee chairs at the start of the legislative period.
