Legendary Russian actress Olga Chipovskaya dies at 67 after four decades of brilliance

Olga Chipovskaya, a renowned Russian actress, has passed away at 67. Her career spanned over four decades, earning her the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 1999 and the Medal of the Order 'For Merit to the Fatherland', Second Class, in 2021.

Born in 1958, Chipovskaya trained at the Boris Shchukin Theatre College, graduating in 1980. That same year, she joined the Vakhtangov Theatre, where she became a defining figure in its productions. Her debut role was Solange in Summer in Noant, but she soon took on iconic parts like Adelm in Princess Turandot, Mimi in The Three Ages of Casanova, and Kapitolina Petrovna in Madame Chanel.

Beyond theatre, she appeared in films such as The Lull (1981), Tevye the Dairyman (1985), and Yolki 3 (2013). Her magnetic charm and emotional range made her a standout performer. In recent years, she continued to grace the stage, featuring in Smile Upon Us, Lord, War and Peace (directed by Rimas Tuminas), and Theatre during her final season.

Chipovskaya's personal life included a marriage to jazz musician Boris Frumkin. Their daughter, Anna Chipovskaya, followed in her footsteps, becoming a well-known actress in Russian theatre and film.

Chipovskaya leaves behind a legacy of powerful performances across theatre and cinema. Her contributions to Russian culture were formally recognised with state honours. She will be remembered for her artistry and the lasting impression she made on audiences.
