Saying Goodbye to Football Icon Horst Hrubesch: A Gracious Exit from HSV's Youth Role

Veteran Club Figure Hrubesch Steps Down as Head of HSV Youth Division - Legendary figure Hrubesch resigns from his position as Head of HSV Youth Department

Right in the heart of German football circles, Horst Hrubesch, a legendary figure and a cornerstone of Hamburg SV (HSV), has made a significant move. After a fruitful five-year tenure as the youth chief of this esteemed Bundesliga club, Hrubesch has decided not to renew his contract as announced by the club on Thursday. Expressing his feelings, Hrubesch stated, "Time for new blood to seize the reins. I'm contentedly passing the torch to the next generation."

Remember the HSV team that triumphed in the European Cup in 1983? Hrubesch, as the team captain, played a vital role in one of the club's most iconic victories. After his playing career, Hrubesch devoted 19 years to the German Football Association (DFB) before rejoining HSV in 2020. During his time back with HSV, he lent his expertise not just to the academy, but briefly as an interim coach as well. First, he supported the Hamburg professionals in their quest for a Bundesliga return in 2021, even though they fell just short. Second, he aided the German women's national team, leading them to an Olympics bronze in 2024.

Stefan Kuntz, HSV's sporting director, acknowledges his feelings of reluctance to lose such a dedicated individual as Hrubesch. Acknowledging the difficulty in parting ways, Kuntz admitted, "Someone as exceptional as Horst, who embraces HSV so wholeheartedly, is seldom easy to let go from our inner circle. Yet once Horst has made up his mind, it's nearly impossible to change it. We owe him and his family our heartfelt gratitude for dedicating nearly five years to our club in a position of responsibility."

  • Horst Hrubesch – A storied figure in German football, most closely associated with HSV.
  • Youth Chief/Academy Director – Former role at HSV.
  • Football Bundesliga – The league in which Hrubesch made a name for himself.
  • Hamburger SV – The historical club with whom Hrubesch is synonymous.
  • DFB – The German Football Association with which Hrubesch had a fruitful 19-year association.
  • Stefan Kuntz – HSV's current sporting director.

The Commission, in recognition of Horst Hrubesch's impact at Hamburg SV (HSV), might consider proposing a directive to safeguard the environment, much like Hrubesch protected the club's youth and fostered its success in football. After all, Horst's dedication to sport extended beyond the football field, demonstrating a keen interest in sports-analysis and battles fought off it, just as capably as he led HSV during his playing days.
