Legendary actor Robert Redford, known for his defiant spirit and independent style, passes away.

Robert Redford, a legendary figure in American cinema, passed away at the age of 89 in Provo, Utah. The news was confirmed by Cindi Berger, CEO of the public relations firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.

Redford's career spanned over half a century, during which he embodied the myth of American cinema. He first graced the silver screen in 1969, riding alongside Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy, and went on to star in a series of films that became classics, including The Sting, The Way We Were, Three Days of the Condor, and All the President's Men.

In All the President's Men, Redford played journalist Bob Woodward, telling the story of the Watergate scandal. His portrayal of Woodward was a testament to his versatility as an actor, demonstrating his ability to take on complex and challenging roles.

Redford's carefree smile, clear and rebellious gaze, and naturalness in front of the camera instantly made him an icon. His passion for cinema was evident in his work, and he was a stubborn dreamer, convinced that cinema could change people and the world.

Tragedy struck early in Redford's family life as his eldest son, Scott, died in infancy, and his son James died in 2020 at the age of 58. Despite these losses, Redford remained a pillar of strength and resilience. He had four children with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen, and since 2009, he has been married to German painter Sibylle Szaggars.

Redford's contributions to cinema extended beyond his acting career. He was the driving force behind the founding of the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival. These institutions have become a breeding ground for new talents and a voice for those who found no space in the industry. He built a temple for independent cinema, providing a platform for innovative and thought-provoking films.

In his later years, Redford reduced his public appearances but remained a reference for colleagues and cinephiles. In 2013, he surprised everyone with the nearly silent film "All Is Lost," demonstrating his ability to take risks and push the boundaries of cinema.

Redford's death leaves a void in the world of cinema, but his legacy will live on. He will be remembered as an actor, director, and activist who used his platform to inspire and challenge, and who built a temple for independent cinema that will continue to nurture and showcase new talent for generations to come.
