Legal petition: YouTube personality Jyoti Malhotra petitions court for routine bail in espionage case
In the small town of Hisar, influencer Jyoti Malhotra, detained on suspected espionage charges last month, made a bid for freedom in court on Tuesday, as her lawyer confirmed.
With her advocate Kumar Mukesh, Malhotra submitted a regular bail plea before Magistrate Sunil Kumar. The court requested a response from the police by June 11, Mukesh informed us.
On June 9, the court prolonged Malhotra's judicial custody, scheduling the case for June 23. Conducting her court appearance through video, the 33-year-old YouTuber, who typically shared travel videos on "Travel with JO", remained in detention.
The Hisar Police arrested Malhotra on suspicion of espionage on May 16, with the court remanding her to five days of police custody. Upon the conclusion of the remand, the court granted the police an additional four days to interrogate her further. On May 26, the court extended her custody to 14 days of judicial detention.
Malhotra, a resident of Hisar, was caught at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police claimed she maintained contact with certain individuals known to be operatives of Pakistani Intelligence, although no evidence of access to military or defense-related information has been discovered[4][5].
Previously, sources pointed out that Malhotra communicated with Ehsan-ur-Rahim, a staff member of the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. Indian authorities expelled Danish on May 13 for engaging in espionage.
Authorities allege that Danish was cultivating Malhotra as an asset for Pakistani intelligence operations[5][6]. The court's decision on her bail plea is pending until June 11, 2025[4].
