Legal disagreement seemingly resolved for Hall & Oates through a reached settlement in their court case
In a surprising turn of events, the long-standing legal dispute between legendary music duo Daryl Hall and John Oates has been resolved through private arbitration. The court case, which was initially filed in November 2023, was dismissed in August 2025.
The dispute arose from John Oates' efforts to sell his share of their joint venture, Whole Oates Enterprises LLP. Daryl Hall accused Oates of "ultimate partnership betrayal" and alleged that the sale would violate their business agreement.
The legal battle involved control over valuable intellectual property and business rights tied to the Hall & Oates brand within Whole Oates Enterprises LLP. This includes not just royalty income, but also trademarks, personal name and likeness rights, website, and social media assets.
The arbitration resulted in a final judgment, but the terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed. Following this, Hall voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit, and both parties have remained silent about the arbitration outcome.
John Oates expressed his "deep hurt" over Daryl Hall's inflammatory statements, but neither Hall nor Oates have made any public comment about the resolution. Daryl Hall has confirmed that no future creative collaboration with John Oates is planned.
The dispute was getting very nasty, with Hall stating that the ship of their musical partnership has gone to the bottom of the ocean. He has not indicated any intention of reversing his stance on the end of their musical partnership.
Fans should not expect a quick resolution to the dispute between Daryl Hall and John Oates. The details of the settlement between the two musicians are still not publicly known.
