Ludwigshafen secures green light for Helmut-Kohl-Allee project

Good news for commuters and entrepreneurs in Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse! After legal hurdles have been overcome, the town of Ludwigshafen can proceed with the demolition and replacement of its aging elevated highway north. This long-awaited transformation includes the construction of the Helmut-Kohl-Allee, an eight-lane link named in honor of the long-serving German Chancellor.

Jutta Steinruck, the city's non-partisan mayor, expressed her relief, stating, "We finally have legal certainty on all aspects; this sends out a positive signal for the entire region." A private individual and the Rhein-Pfalz district previously filed complaints against the planning approval decision, but both have now withdrawn their objections.

The Helmut-Kohl-Allee is set to become a vital component of Ludwigshafen's traffic infrastructure. By 2030/31, the city will replace the current elevated highway with a multi-lane city road and a new bridge spanning the railway tracks. This significant project is expected to improve traffic flow and support economic growth in the region.

Originally built in the 1960s, the elevated highway was deemed outdated and in need of replacement. The decision to name the new link after Helmut Kohl was made as a posthumous tribute to the politician, who was born and passed away in Ludwigshafen.

The construction of the Westbrücke, a 440-meter-long bridge spanning the railway area, is currently underway. The project involves the construction of 11 pillars on the railway area, with the first pillar already placed on Gleis 1. The estimated budget for the Westbrücke and the Helmut-Kohl-Allee is 865 million euros, and the project is scheduled for completion by 2028.

The new Helmut-Kohl-Allee is set to become a major transportation axis in Ludwigshafen, extending from the Pasadena-Allee. Close coordination with Deutsche Bahn is necessary to manage railway operations and ensure that the required railway infrastructure is in place.

For now, construction activity is ongoing with some temporary traffic restrictions in place, such as a 50 km/h speed limit and narrower traffic lanes on the Auffahrt zur Hochstraße Nord. The completion of the Westbrücke and the Helmut-Kohl-Allee is expected to significantly improve Ludwigshafen's transportation infrastructure, benefitting both commuters and entrepreneurs.
