Left's membership has more than doubled to reach 120,000 individuals
In a surprising turn of events, Germany's political landscape is undergoing a notable transformation, with the Left party (Die Linke) experiencing a remarkable surge in membership. According to reports by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the party has doubled its membership in just a few months, now boasting approximately 120,000 members.
This year alone, a staggering 64,000 people have joined the Left party, adding to the 50,800 members the party had at the end of 2023. The party's leader, Ines Schwerdtner, attributes this growth to the way the party does politics and communicates with the people.
Meanwhile, the Greens party has also seen an increase in membership, growing to around 170,000 members, having gained more than 40,000 members since the collapse of the coalition government. However, the Greens still maintain a higher membership number than the Left party.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, too, has seen growth, doubling from two years ago to currently have about 70,000 members. The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has also experienced growth, currently standing at approximately 4,500 members.
This trend of growing political engagement in Germany is reflected not only in the Left party's surge but also in the increase in membership of the AfD and alliance "Sahra Wagenknecht". The average age in the Left party is 38.62 years, indicating a diverse and youthful membership.
The growing membership of these parties gives them strength for the upcoming elections, promising a potentially vibrant and dynamic political landscape in Germany. The rise in membership numbers, particularly in the Left party, could signal a shift in the country's political direction. Only time will tell how this change will unfold.
