In the political landscape of Germany, a significant shift has been observed in the membership numbers of three major parties: the Left party, the Greens, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

As of the end of 2023, the Left party, led by Sahra Wagenknecht, boasts a membership of around 120,000. This figure represents a substantial increase from the beginning of the year, with approximately 64,000 new members joining in just a few months. The party attributes this growth to their political approach and communication style.

The AfD, on the other hand, has experienced a remarkable surge in membership compared to two years ago. Currently, the party has around 70,000 members, double their membership two years prior. This growth occurred over a period of two years.

The Greens, however, remain the frontrunner with a membership count of approximately 170,000. The membership increase for the Greens occurred in the months following the collapse of the traffic light government. Party leader Ines Schwerdtner stated that the way they do politics and speak to people resonates.

The average age in the Left party is 38.62 years, suggesting a relatively young membership. This contrasts with the AfD, whose average age is not provided, and the Greens, for whom data is not available.

The growing membership of the Left party gives them strength for the upcoming elections, while the increase in the AfD and Greens' membership numbers indicate a trend of growing opposition within the German political sphere.

Notably, the collapse of the traffic light government seems to have sparked a surge in membership for both the Greens and the Left party. Over 40,000 people have joined the Greens in the months following the government's collapse, and the Left party, led by Wagenknecht, has gained approximately 4,500 members in the same period.

As of 2025, the current leadership of the German Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) is held by Franziska Brantner and Felix Banaszak. Robert Habeck, the previous co-chairman and former Vice Chancellor, stepped down from party leadership.

The membership growth of these parties could potentially impact the upcoming elections, as a larger membership base often translates to increased political influence. However, the exact implications remain to be seen.
