In the political landscape of Germany, several parties have experienced a significant increase in membership numbers in recent times.

The Greens, following the collapse of the traffic light government, have seen a notable surge in support. More than 40,000 people joined the Greens in the months that followed, bringing their current membership count to approximately 170,000.

The Left party, too, has witnessed a growth in its membership. At the end of last year, the party had around 50,800 members, but this has since increased to 120,000. Despite this, the Greens still maintain a higher membership count.

The AfD, on the other hand, has seen a growth in membership over a period of two years. The party now boasts approximately 70,000 members, up from half that number two years ago.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) currently holds the title for the party with the highest membership, with approximately 357,116 members as of the end of 2024.

An alliance "Stand Up" led by Sahra Wagenknecht has also gained members in recent months, with approximately 4,500 new members joining.

The party leaders attribute this growth to the way they do politics and speak to people. Greens' leader, Ines Schwerdtner, stated that their approach is resonating with the public.

The growing membership of the Left party strengthens them for the upcoming elections, providing them with a solid base of support. However, the AfD still has a higher membership count than both the Left party and the "Stand Up" alliance.

These shifts in party membership highlight the ongoing political dynamics in Germany and the evolving interests of its citizens. The changing landscape will likely influence the outcome of future elections and shape the country's political future.
