The Left Party in Hamburg is on the rise, posting a net gain of members since Sahra Wagenknecht's departure. Following Wagenknecht's resignation and the formation of her own association, there's been a wave of new members and a few dissenters. With 72 new sign-ups and just 45 departures, the party is gaining momentum, particularly after their successful federal conference.

The party's renewed popularity can be chalked up to a multitude of factors. The contentious votes on asylum policies have sparked concerns among left-leaning voters about shifting politics to the right, boosting interest in the Left Party. Additionally, the growing rightward trend in German politics and the party's progressive stance have attracted new members seeking an alternative.

The change in party leadership also plays a part. With the new team of Jan van Aken and Ines Schwerdtner at the helm, there's been a push for digital outreach and a refreshed image, contributing to the surge in membership.

Demographically, the new members are younger, averaging 28.7 years old, representing a promising long-term growth opportunity for the party. Female participation has also surged, making up nearly 53% of the new members and boosting the party's overall female representation to over 42%.

The boost in membership has given the Left Party renewed hope of meeting the 5% threshold to enter the Bundestag, possibly without solely relying on direct mandates. Simultaneously, the party's former leader Sahra Wagenknecht's Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is also vying for votes, but with recent polls suggesting that it might fall short of the 5% threshold, potential benefits could accrue to the Left Party.

In the midst of surviving and capitalizing on rightward trends in migration policy, the party must navigate internal changes to ensure long-term growth and ideological coherence.
