Left Group welcomes Reichinnek and Pellmann as their new Chairmen
The Left Group in the Bundestag Gets New Leadership
The Left group in the German Bundestag has a new leadership team, with Heidi Reichinnek and Sören Pellmann taking on the roles of co-chairs. The election took place on February 19, 2025, following the 2025 federal election in which the party won 8.8% of the vote.
The election came after a period of instability when the previous Bundestag faction had dissolved in December 2023, leaving Heidi Reichinnek initially without a faction seat. The previous chair of the group was Dietmar Bartsch, who did not run for re-election.
Heidi Reichinnek and Sören Pellmann were the only candidates for the co-chair positions. The election was closely contested, with both candidates receiving 14 votes each, while Clara Bünger, who ran for the co-chair position, received 13 votes. Sören Pellmann was elected over Clara Bünger for the position.
Clara Bünger, who leads the working group on law, democracy, and antifascism within the faction, was a parliamentary figure but was not a candidate for the co-chair position. This reflects the internal party choices and factional dynamics during the reformation of the group.
With the new leadership in place, The Left group in the Bundestag now has a clear direction moving forward. Heidi Reichinnek and Sören Pellmann will work together to represent the interests of the party and its supporters in the German parliament. The new co-chairs assume their roles on February 19.
