Lee, the President of South Korea, scheduled to confer with Trump in Washington on August 25 for a summit meeting.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet on August 25, 2025, to discuss key issues related to security, defense, and economic cooperation. The summit will take place in Washington, D.C.

The meeting comes as Lee Jae-myung, who won the election in June, prepares to lead South Korea. Previously, the position was held by Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted for declaring martial law.

One of the main topics on the agenda will be the security and defense cost-sharing, including South Korea's potential increase in contributions to the stationing of U.S. forces. The U.S. administration may demand higher payments for the troop presence in South Korea, a concern shared by both sides.

Another focus will be on the modernization of the Korea-U.S. alliance, with an aim to develop it into a "future-oriented, comprehensive strategic alliance." This modernization will likely involve a recalibration of U.S. Forces Korea's role in light of changing regional dynamics.

Economic issues will also be on the table, particularly tied to a recent tariff agreement. South Korea has agreed to invest $350 Billion Dollars for U.S. investments, and has also agreed to purchase $100 Billion Dollars of LNG or other Energy products. Additionally, the discussion will centre around trade, including a proposed South Korean investment fund for the U.S. market and expanded imports of American agricultural goods.

Both sides are also expected to reaffirm the importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance and discuss plans to deepen and expand the partnership. Emphasis will be placed on trilateral security cooperation between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.

The discussion between Lee and Trump will address the changing international security and economic environment. Both leaders will work towards issuing a joint statement to reflect these bilateral agreements.

In recent months, North Korean troops have been sent to Russia, raising concerns over potential technology transfers to North Korea from Russia that could enhance its nuclear weapons and missile program. This issue is likely to be discussed during the summit.

The summit between Lee Jae-myung and Donald Trump will provide an opportunity for both leaders to address these key issues and shape the future of the Korea-U.S. alliance.
