Jorge Costa, a highly respected Portuguese international central defender and former captain of FC Porto, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 53 due to cardiac arrest. Known for his aggressive and physical playing style, Costa spent most of his career at FC Porto, where he made a staggering 383 appearances over 15 seasons.

During his time with the club, Costa led Porto to some of their most significant victories. He captained the team to a surprise win in the 2004 UEFA Champions League and the 2003 UEFA Cup. His trophy cabinet at FC Porto includes eight Primeira Liga championships, five Portuguese Cups, five Super Cups, and an Intercontinental Cup.

Costa was also a key player in Portugal's international success. He earned 50 caps for the national team, participating in the 1991 FIFA U-20 World Cup victory, UEFA Euro 2000, and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His most notable achievement with the national team was winning the World Cup under-20 in 1991 in Lisbon.

Throughout his career, Costa was known by the nicknames "Bicho" and "Tanque" for his robust defensive play. After retiring as a player, he went into management, managing several clubs and the Gabon national team. In June 2024, he returned to Porto as the director of football, a role he held until his passing.

The football community mourned Costa's death, with tributes being held at the Dragão Stadium between 15:00 and 22:00. His funeral mass is scheduled for Thursday at the Church of São João Baptista da Foz do Douro, followed by a visit to the Cemetery of Agramonte.

The match between FC Porto and Vitória SC, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Monday, the 11th, at 20:45. The match will mark the official debut of Italian coach Francesco Farioli at FC Porto.

Rest in peace, Jorge Costa. Your legacy as a warrior on the field and a symbol of Porto’s success will never be forgotten.
