Striking Attack on Referee Halil Umut Meler Leads to Turmoil in Turkish Football
After the harsh clash involving referee Halil Umut Meler in a Turkish league match, all games are suspended until December 19, according to Mehmet Büyükeksi, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) leader. The incident occurred during a first-division match in Turkey, and the assailant was later revealed to be Ankaragücü club president Faruk Koca, who resigned upon public outcry.
Turkish government officials are also evaluating potential legislative changes following this shocking encounter. The justice minister, Yilmaz Tunc, discussed potential law modifications on the X platform. The hostile scenes unfolded after the game on Monday evening, with Koca attacking Meler after the final whistle, using his fist. Meler then dropped to the ground as others joined in with kicks. Rizespor secured a 1-1 equalizer in the seventh minute of extra time.
Meler later reported that Koca had threatened to take his life. The assault caused great backlash beyond Turkish borders, with numerous soccer figures, like former star referee Pierluigi Collina and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, expressing their disgust. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also denounced the incident.
The Ankaragücü club later released a statement announcing Ismail Mert Firat as Koca's successor. An arrest warrant was also issued against Koca and other suspects, including for "injuring a public servant."
In a separate incident, Adana Demirspor's team was penalized with a 3-0 forfeit and three-point deduction following the actions of their owner, Murat Sanak, and player Cihan Elçiçek. Meanwhile, Sanak faces a 30-day suspension and a £13,100 fine. The Turkish Football Federation also announced new regulations, boosting penalties against clubs involved in arbitrarily leaving matches.
