League Leaders Initiate Substantial Revamp Worth £130 Million on Their Three-Decade-Old Stadium
Nottingham Forest's City Ground Getting a Massive Overhaul
It's about time the City Ground sees some action! Rushcliffe Borough Council has finally given the green light to the plans to construct a new stand and residential buildings.
This Premier League arena hasn't experienced any substantial updates since 1996. But with this redevelopment, the adrenaline is surging through the veins of Nottingham Forest fans.
Forget about the Peter Taylor Stand—it's time for a revolutionary replacement! The new stand, set to tower at 38 meters, will dwarf the rest, becoming the stadium's crown jewel. The expansion is expected to double the capacity of the City Ground to approximately 10,000, bringing the total seating up from 30,404 to around 35,000.
Forest released a statement to share their delight: "We are elated that Rushcliffe Borough Council's Planning Committee has given the go-ahead for our redevelopment application concerning the City Ground. Stay tuned for another update soon."
Back in 2019, the architectural firm Benoy announced the redevelopment plans, estimating the project would cost £94 million. However, as of January 2025, the budget has swelled to £130 million due to technical refinements and inflation.
The new and improved stadium will also boast a "dramatic cantilevered roof" along with additional facilities, such as a museum and a brand-new club shop.
The developers claim the residential building, a 13-story monster of steel and glass, will contain 170 flats, commercial spaces, and 67 parking spots. The aim is to enhance the fan experience and spur local economic growth.
Benoy's CEO, Tom Cartledge, beamed, "I've been a Forest fan since I was a kid, and my family's legacy of support goes back 72 years. The plan is to build upon the ground's rich history and create an unparalleled experience for fans and players alike."
The stadium's location close to the River Trent requires theлов of the Environment Agency, who've issued some stipulations to ensure the safety of stadium-goers and residents in flood zones.
In the long run, the Bridgford End may also see development, potentially taking the overall capacity beyond the 40,000 mark if all goes as planned.
Forest, who reclaimed their spot in the Premier League in 2022 after a 21-year absence, concluded the 2024/25 season in seventh position, securing a spot in the Conference League.
