League halts participation of goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka amid betting accusations
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended Plateau United goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka, pending the outcome of an investigation into betting allegations against him. The suspension, confirmed by NPFL's Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, in a letter to Adeyinka and Plateau United, comes at a challenging time for both the player and the club as they prepare for the new season.
The suspension is provisional and will remain in place until the investigation's conclusion. Under the NPFL's Framework and Rules, players are strictly prohibited from engaging in any form of betting involving football matches, and violations carry sanctions under Section C.
Adeyinka, a key player for Plateau United, was a prime target for Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) before the allegations emerged. However, with the suspension in place, 3SC may now reconsider their goalkeeping options. Super Eagles goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke might become a priority for 3SC as they try to strengthen their goalkeeping department for the season that begins on 22 August 2025.
Plateau United reported Adeyinka to the league authorities due to a contractual clause for immediate termination in the event of being found guilty of betting offences. The suspension underscores the NPFL's firm stance against betting infractions in football.
The primary focus of the investigation is to clarify the truth about the betting claims against Adeyinka. The NPFL officials have promised to consider Adeyinka's representation fairly during the investigation process, offering him a chance to defend himself. The outcome of the investigation will have significant implications for both Adeyinka and Plateau United.
The NPFL's strict prohibition on betting aims to protect the league's integrity and reputation. Players found guilty of betting violations can face lengthy suspensions or bans from competition, as outlined in the NPFL Framework and Rules. Adeyinka's reaction to the suspension and the league's continued efforts to maintain the integrity of Nigerian football will be closely watched.
