Leading the Way in New Delhi: Whiteford Takes the Early Lead

Whiteford Leads Avantha Masters in New Delhi

Peter Whiteford, ranked 236th in the world, is making waves in the Avantha Masters in New Delhi, India. After a strong opening round of 66, Whiteford followed it up with a round of 68, giving him a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the tournament.

Whiteford's round included an eagle and five birdies, but he also had three bogeys, two of which were during "freezing cold" conditions. This is noteworthy as Whiteford has yet to win a title on the circuit, and this is his best performance so far. His previous best finish was as the runner-up in the 2010 Andalucian Open.

Thai golfer Prom Meesawat is close behind, in second place after a best-of-the-week score of 64. Meesawat's impressive round included birdies on five of the last six holes.

Four golfers - Chapchai Nirat, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Kieran Pratt, and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet - are all within one stroke of Whiteford, the leader. Jamie Donaldson, seeking his first victory on the circuit, is currently four strokes behind the leader after three-putting at the final two greens.

The tournament does not feature any of the world's top 60 golfers. Paul McGinley, Scot Marc Warren, England's Jamie Moul, and Wales' Rhys Davies are all five strokes behind the leader, with scores of 72, 73, 72, and 73 respectively. Richie Ramsay, a former US Amateur champion, missed the cut by one stroke after missing a two-foot putt on the last hole.

Alejandro Canizares, the joint first-round leader, has a score of 73 and is now five strokes behind the leader. The tournament is being held in New Delhi, India.
