Iran has confirmed the death of the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, General Major Hussein Salami. He reportedly died during an Israeli attack on the headquarters of the infamous elite military force. The Chief of the General Staff also perished.

In this large-scale Israeli attack on Iran, the leader of the powerful Revolutionary Guards has been killed. According to the Tasnim news agency, which is the mouthpiece of the Iranian elite military force, Salami was killed in an attack on the main headquarters of the Revolutionary Guards' command center. Salami was one of the most powerful men in the Islamic Republic until his death.

From Israeli security circles, it was announced that "probably Mohammad Bagheri," the Chief of Staff of the Iranian military, "was neutralized" during the attacks. The state-owned Iranian television confirmed the death early in the morning. Initially, the state news agency Irna reported that Bagheri had survived the attack unscathed in a command center.

Politics | Immediate Retaliation Expected: Israel Attacks Iran

Tasnim confirmed the death of two well-known nuclear scientists. Both Mohammed Mehdi Tehrantschi, a professor of physics, and Fereydun Abbasi, the former head of Iran's nuclear program, are reported to have died in the attack, according to the news agency. According to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli attacks targeted the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz and associated scientists.

The Revolutionary Guard is Iran's elite military force and is far more powerful than the regular military forces. In the past few decades, they have not only been militarily well-equipped. They have also expanded their social and economic influence and hold interests in hotel chains and airlines.

Israel claims it has struck dozens of military and nuclear targets in Iran. According to the US news site Axios, Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, has also launched a series of clandestine sabotage operations in Iran parallel to the airforce attacks. Axios cites a high-ranking Israeli government official.

The Israeli attack in June 2025 reportedly resulted in the deaths of several nuclear scientists. Although various sources list a total of six nuclear scientists killed, Iranian state media and international reports specifically identify Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari, and Amirhossein Feqhi as the deceased. Some sources also mention Abdolhamid Minouchehr and Motalleblizadeh as additional fatalities, but the first four are the most frequently reported in relation to Iran’s nuclear program. These scientists, who held prominent roles at key institutions like Shahid Beheshti University and were involved in nuclear research and development, were a significant loss to Iran’s nuclear program as their expertise, experience, and leadership were pivotal to the advancement of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, including uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel production. The impact of their deaths may disrupt ongoing research, slow the pace of nuclear development, and create leadership gaps within the program, but Iran's nuclear infrastructure remains operational, and the country has a history of swiftly replacing key personnel following similar attacks in the past.

In the wake of the Israeli attacks, the Tasnim news agency confirmed the death of Fereydun Abbasi, a former head of Iran's nuclear program, alongside Mohammad Mehdi Tehrantschi, a professor of physics, both of whom played significant roles in Iran's nuclear research and development. The Revolutionary Guards, a powerful military force in Iran, have been affected with the death of General Major Hussein Salami, the commander, and probably Mohammad Bagheri, the Chief of Staff. The incidents might escalate political tensions and would likely lead to immediate retaliation.
