Leading Contenders for the First Round of BMW Championship: American Ryder Cup Members Predicted to Maintain Pace in Anticipated Birdie-Laden Tournament
The 2025 BMW Championship is set to tee off, promising an exciting week of golf at a course known for producing low scores. The tournament, scheduled to be broadcast in the US/ET from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Golf Channel/NBC Sports App, and in the UK/BST from 5:00pm to 11:00pm on Sky Sports Golf, will offer another round of FedEx Cup Playoffs bonus payments upon its conclusion.
Several players have already demonstrated their potential to lead the pack early on. Among them is world No. 1, two-time FedExCup winner at the event, and current contender for the first-round leader, Scottie Scheffler. Known for his consistent strong performance throughout the season, Scheffler boasts the lowest overall adjusted and total scoring average, placing him at No.1 on the PGA Tour. He also leads in birdie average, first in bogey avoidance, and has the highest birdie-or-better percentage of anyone on the PGA Tour. Scheffler had a solid opening round at -4, and with first-round leader odds around +750, he is considered a strong favorite to contend deep into the tournament.
Another potential first-round leader is Robert MacIntyre, who showed exceptional early form and opened with a strong score, leading at -8 after Round 1 with odds +400 to win. After Round 2, he extended his lead over Scheffler, demonstrating strong momentum.
Tommy Fleetwood posted an impressive first round at -5 and ranks among the leading contenders with odds at +600.
Ludvig Åberg was somewhat further back at -2 after Round 1 but created buzz due to strong form and birdie potential with odds at +2000, showing potential to jump into a first-round lead with momentum.
Rory McIlroy made an eagle during Round 2 and showed resilient play, putting him in contention despite starting more conservatively at even par (E) after Round 1. His odds were also +2000 for first-round leader status.
Meanwhile, Ben Griffin, who did not play in the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley but is now competing at a higher level, is also a potential contender for the first-round leader. Griffin has opened with scores of 66 or 67 in six of his seven most recent top-25 results, including his win at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
As the tournament progresses, keep an eye on these frontrunners. The BMW Championship in 2025 is a 49-man tournament with high stakes, as players near the tournament bubble are aware that a poor performance could cost them both money and a chance to play in the Ryder Cup.
JT Poston, currently in 50th place, has a chance to progress to the Tour Championship and potentially finish in the top-10. The first round will be a crucial step towards determining who will emerge as the eventual champion.
