Leading Canadian Graphite Companies in 2025

In the dynamic world of graphene production, HydroGraph Clean Power Inc. has made significant strides this year, scaling up its operations and expanding its U.S. footprint.

HydroGraph, an emerging powerhouse in the bulk graphene business, operates a commercial-scale plant in Manhattan, Kansas, producing approximately 10 tons per year of its flagship “fractalline” graphene. The company plans to expand with a larger factory in Texas, expected to output around 25 tons per year by 2025–26.

The Austin expansion, which includes a new 20,000-square-foot headquarters facility, is scheduled to become operational by February 2026. This new hub aims to employ about 30 people by 2027, supporting the company’s strategy to scale its patented detonation synthesis technology and foster partnerships in key industries such as aerospace, defense, energy storage, and advanced materials.

The strategic location of the Austin headquarters was chosen to strengthen HydroGraph's presence in the U.S. manufacturing corridor, providing better access to talent and proximity to partners. This move is expected to facilitate customer collaborations and commercialization efforts across multiple sectors.

Economically, HydroGraph emphasises cost-effective scaling through modular reactors, with capital expenditures estimated at around $10–15 million for capacity that could generate roughly $100 million in annual graphene sales. The company claims its production cost per gram of graphene could undercut most competitors if throughput and operating cost targets are met.

As for market performance, no specific recent details on stock price or revenue figures were found. However, the strategic expansions and increased production capacity indicate positive growth and scaling momentum for HydroGraph Clean Power Inc. this year.

Meanwhile, Focus Graphite Advanced Materials, a company that straddles the line between graphite mining and battery technology, supplies graphite to Black Swan, another player in the graphene market. Focus Graphite holds the highest-purity graphite project in Quebec, Lac Tétépisca, and boasts a patent-pending proprietary silicone-enhanced spheroidized graphite technology.

In the UK, Thomas Swan & Co., a global chemicals manufacturer, holds a 15 percent interest in Black Swan, bringing a portfolio of patents and intellectual property related to graphene production to the table. Black Swan has also signed a non-exclusive distribution and sales agreement with METCO Resources.

Black Swan Graphene, a spinout of Mason Resources, is building out a fully integrated supply chain of mine-to-graphene products, positioning itself as an emerging force in the bulk graphene business. The company reached its highest year-to-date price of C$1.52 on July 23, and its share price traded sideways for much of the year before benefiting greatly from a summer surge.

In Quebec, Mason Resources owns the Uatnan graphite project and holds a 39 percent stake in Black Swan. Focus Graphite's shares hit their highest year-to-date value of C$0.17 on June 17. The company's flagship Lac Knife high-grade crystalline flake graphite project is located in Northeastern Quebec. Preliminary metallurgical testing confirmed the quality of the project's flake graphite, and definition drilling at Lac Tétépisca extended the strike length of the mineralized zone to over 6 kilometers.

Thermal purification testing on Lac Knife flake graphite completed by the American Energy Technologies Company resulted in refined concentrate to a purity level of 99.999 percent carbon. These developments underscore the potential of these companies in the competitive graphene market.
