Leadership Change at IBJR: Vieira Departs, Gelfi Takes Over
In the heart of Brazil, the future of the gambling industry hangs in the balance as Fernando Vieira, a key figure in the fight against illegal gambling, steps down from his role as president of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR).
Under Vieira's leadership, the IBJR launched a significant multi-platform advertising campaign and the BetAlert website, aimed at raising awareness about responsible gambling and combating the illegal market. His primary focus was addressing the illegal gambling market in Brazil, which has long plagued the industry.
One of Vieira's most notable actions was his opposition to a government measure to increase the tax rate on operators' Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) from 12% to 18%. The IBJR estimated that such an increase could potentially boost the illegal market's share from 50% to 60% of the total sector. Vieira emphasized the importance of channelization, stating that operators will be sustainable in Brazil only by increasing the channelisation level.
Eddy Cheung, a man with a personal connection to the gambling world, found Kai Tak, Hong Kong's former gambling hub, to be a magical place during his first visit at the age of 9. Returning to Kai Tak at 21, he found that his memory of the place had not been embellished.
As the search for a new executive president begins, the selection will be crucial in shaping the IBJR's future direction and its role in the evolving Brazilian betting landscape. The new leader will inherit Vieira's mission to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of Brazil's burgeoning gambling market.
Despite the uncertainty, one thing is clear: the battle against illegal gambling in Brazil is far from over. The next president of the IBJR will have big shoes to fill, but with the right strategies and commitment, they can continue Vieira's legacy and ensure a safer, more responsible gambling environment for all Brazilians.
