Leaders Modi and Carney Look to Mend Relationships Following Diplomatic Dispute

Leaders Modi and Carney aim to mend strained relations following a period of diplomatic disagreement.

In an exciting turn of events, Indian PM Narendra Modi and the newly-minted Canadian PM Mark Carney had a much-awaited huddle on the outskirts of the G7 summit, marking a significant thaw in their 2-year-old strained relationship. The chill was due to the 2023 hit on a Sikh separatist in Canada.

During this meeting, Modi expresses optimism about reviving collaboration, congratulating Carney on his recent victory and stating, "With this chap, India and Canada will team up to march forward in numerous aspects."

Carney, who stepped into office in March, feels honored to host Modi at the G7 Summit in the Canadian Rockies, emphasizing India's pivotal role in global supply chains. Although India isn't a G7 member, Carney invited him as a token of India's growing global might, according to DW.COM

As per Carney's office announcements, these two powerhouses reaffirmed their ties, rooted in mutual respect, the rule of law, and a shared belief in sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a decisive move, Modi and Carney agreed to appoint new high commissioners to reboot diplomatic communications. These critical roles have remained vacant since both countries exchanged their diplomats following the assassination controversy.

The Canadian PM's office highlights that this move aims to revive regular services for residents and businesses in both countries.

The diplomatic gap originated from the 2023 slaying of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. He met his end outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia.

Trudeau, then PM, accused the Indian government of being complicit in Nijjar's murder. Canada then expelled six Indian diplomats, alleging a coordinated silencing strategy by New Delhi against dissidents abroad.

India, however, denies any involvement and counter-accused Canada of harboring Sikh separatists.
