Leaders Connected Over Phone: Latest Discussion Involving Putin and His Allies
In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, a significant series of events have unfolded in recent times.
A strategically important bridge in the Russian region of Belgorod was destroyed by a Ukrainian suicide drone, disrupting the transportation of equipment and troops of the Russian Armed Forces. The bridge, which played a central role in logistics, was reportedly targeted by Ukrainian scouts who discovered anti-tank mines on the structure before a drone triggered a chain reaction.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping sees the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as an opportunity to improve relations between Washington and Moscow. However, the potential meeting, without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has sparked sharp criticism in Ukraine.
The key proposal discussed by Russian President Vladimir Putin with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to end the Ukraine War was a ceasefire in exchange for Ukraine's eastern regions. Specifically, Putin offered to halt hostilities if Ukraine withdrew its forces from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, ceding full control of these areas to Russia, along with Crimea. European and Ukrainian officials remain wary of these proposals, suspecting they may be a strategic maneuver by Russia to maintain territorial gains and evade harsher sanctions.
In other developments, Ukrainian drones attacked more than 23,000 Russian targets in July, killing over 5,000 enemy soldiers. The Ukrainian military has also neutralized a Russian sabotage unit in the besieged city of Pokrovsk, using reconnaissance drones to locate the attackers before engaging them.
On the domestic front, the federal government is pushing ahead with the planned Military Service Act and strengthening the rights of the Bundestag in the event of a possible conscription. The Ukrainian military has also faced internal challenges, with the authorities investigating the head of the investigative prison in the southern Russian city of Taganrog for "cruel treatment of civilians."
The conflict has also taken a toll on civilians. A 17-year-old and a girl allegedly detonated an explosive device on behalf of Russian services in the city of Shytomyr, resulting in one death and another person severely injured. Viktoria Roschtschyna, a Ukrainian journalist, died in Russian custody in August 2023 while researching in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories. Her body was returned to Ukraine in February of this year.
As the conflict continues, European states are concerned that US President Donald Trump has not exerted any pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes a ceasefire in the Ukraine war is becoming more likely, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has been in communication with leaders from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Belarus, discussing the ongoing situation.
In a positive note, the German Armed Forces have repaired a damaged radar of the air defense system Patriot in Ukraine, demonstrating international support for Ukraine's defense efforts. The conversations between the leaders of the world's superpowers continue, with the fate of Ukraine hanging in the balance.
