The Vietnamese community in South Korea is a vibrant and growing group, with over 300,000 members, including workers, students, and multicultural families. This community is not only contributing economically and socially to both countries but also preserving and promoting their cultural identity abroad.
With nearly 90,000 Vietnamese spouses in multicultural families and over 100,000 Vietnamese students, the community is diverse and dynamic. They focus on maintaining their cultural roots while adapting to Korean society, reflecting strong ties to their homeland.
Vietnamese nationals constitute the second-largest foreign group in South Korea, with around 341,000 residents as of mid-2025. This number has seen a significant increase of over 38,000 individuals (around 15.3%) compared to previous years, contributing to the gradual rise of South Korea’s total population despite the native population decline.
The relationship between Vietnam and South Korea is strengthening through cultural, economic, and diplomatic efforts, with clear government support for overseas Vietnamese. Both countries are expanding their partnership with a focus on people-to-people exchange, education, labor cooperation, and cultural connection. Business investments, trade, and tourism also play important roles in this relationship, with South Korean tourists favoring Vietnamese destinations such as Da Nang.
Recently, Party General Secretary Tô Lâm met with staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Seoul and members of the Vietnamese community in the Republic of Korea. During his visit, General Secretary Lâm outlined the Party and State's strategic directions for the future, praised the community for preserving and promoting their cultural identity abroad, and requested the embassy to take note of all feedback from the community.
General Secretary Lâm also updated the community on Vietnam's recent achievements across key sectors and will continue to call on the South Korean government to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese people to live and work. His visit to South Korea is expected to further elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Vietnamese Ambassador to South Korea, Vũ Hò, briefed General Secretary Lâm on the embassy's recent activities and the state of Vietnam-South Korea ties. They stressed the importance of citizen protection and support for community development. General Secretary Lâm acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of Vietnamese people in contributing to the growing Vietnam-South Korea partnership.
Many Vietnamese in South Korea have received recognition from the South Korean Government for their contributions to local society. Relevant ministries and agencies will be tasked with addressing the concerns of the Vietnamese community appropriately. The embassy and other representative offices have worked closely with relevant South Korean authorities to advance and implement bilateral cooperation agreements.
The Vietnamese community in South Korea upholds strong traditions of unity, mutual support, and cultural identity. Members of the community have actively contributed to Vietnam's development and national defense. General Secretary Lâm reaffirmed that overseas Vietnamese are an inseparable part of the nation.
