Young Goalkeeper Thomas Gillier Makes Professional Debut with CF Montreal

Thomas Gillier, a 21-year-old goalkeeper, made his professional debut with CF Montreal on Tuesday night, marking a significant milestone in his career. This debut was not just a new chapter, but also a representation of the culmination of a challenging period in his life.

Born in Chile to a French father and Chilean mother, Gillier joined Universidad Católica’s youth academy at the age of 11. His professional journey took an unexpected turn when he lost both his parents—his father to a heart attack in 2023, and his mother after a three-year battle with cancer in 2024. Despite this personal hardship, Gillier continued his steady development from a young age in Universidad Católica’s youth system and made his professional debut in 2024.

Gillier's bicultural background and multilingual ability (speaking French) potentially contributed to his adaptability and resilience in international environments. After his debut, he signed with Bologna in Italy by 2025 and went on loan to CF Montreal in MLS. His loan from Bologna to Montreal is theoretically valid until the end of the 2025 season, with a possible prolongation option for the 2026 season.

Thomas and his older brother Matheo took on the responsibility of caring for the family after their parents' deaths. Matheo is studying literature in Madrid, Simon is in Paris trying to become an economist, and Mathilde has stayed in Chile with their aunt. Despite the family's budget constraints during this time, all four siblings were encouraged to pursue their dreams.

Gillier feels a sense of responsibility towards CF Montreal and its fans. CF Montreal, a major club in Chile, with 16 top-flight titles, including its most recent in 2021, is supported by an entire city. The club maintains a fierce rivalry with Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile in Santiago, the capital.

Luca Saputo, CF Montreal's sporting director, asked Gillier to focus 100% on Montreal, even though he is a Bologna player. Gillier was attracted to CF Montreal by the project of growing as a player in Quebec metropolis. He had meetings with Luca Saputo before joining Montreal.

Thomas Gillier's career trajectory illustrates how he managed personal adversity and professional growth simultaneously. His maturity amid tragedy was reflected in his career progression, as he maintained focus and resilience, debuting professionally soon after the losses. As he continues his journey with CF Montreal, Gillier is committed to giving his all to Montreal during his time there.

Thomas Gillier's professional football career began with his debut for CF Montreal, a club known for its rich history in Chilean sports. With a background in Chile and France, Gillier's adaptability and resilience, honed through the challenges he faced, are apparent as he continues to excel in the sport.
